Ballistics

Ballistics

It is well-known that armored vehicles can be manufactured directly on the factory that produces base vehicles or be armored after the construction – by specialized companies.
With armoring deal only three European manufacturers: Daimler (in its range - Maybach and the Mercedes lineup, including the Presidential Pullman), Audi (A6 and A8 model) and BMW (“5”, "7" and X5). But this only applies to passenger cars which cannot provide the best possible ballistic protection. We offer an alternative - a higher level of safety and excellent comfort. We’ll try to explain a little bit tangled situation with determining the degree of ballistic protection. There are up to 10 standards of ballistic protection in the world. They tend to have a protection class with the corresponding serial number. And sometimes the confusion appears when the manufacturer provides test reports, certificates of class 4, which may protect due to different standards against guns, automatic weapons of 7.62 caliber and sniper rifles with armor-piercing bullets.
In the European Union civic armored vehicles are certified according to single ballistic standards EN 1063/1522/1523, with only seven levels of protection, and they are indicated by letters and numbers (from B2 to B7). The standard USA NIJ0108-01 includes classes 2, 2a, 3, 3a, 4. At the same time classes 2, 2a, 3, 3a correspond to the classes B2-B6 (EN 1063/1522/1523), and class 4 – to B7 (EN 1063/1522/1523) respectively and provides protection against armor-piercing incendiary bullets 7,62h54mm B -32, protection against which does not provide any civilian armored car.
The fact is the European Standards (EN) no longer satisfy a number of European experts. But the biggest drawback of EN is that they provide only conventional ammunition fired from within Europe and America. Meanwhile, the markets which need armored vehicles the most - the CIS, the Middle East and Latin America, offer a lot of Russian weapons. Is "euro armor" able to sustain shelling from AKM or even more powerful Dragunov sniper rifle? And what type of ammunition? There are cartridges with simple steel and heat-treated cores, with enhanced penetration, armor-piercing, armor-piercing incendiary cartridges etc... Therefore, Daimler, Audi and BMW, Porsche and Krauss-Maffei (the one that makes Leopard tanks) have adapted EN standards to the production of the automotive industry by creating BRV 1999 standards. Then, European certification and police authorities have established standards for the protection of materials APR 2006, included there a number of Russian and new European cartridges. Then both of the new standards, "automotive" and "police", were combined into one - BRV 2009.
We use particularly this standard. As a result of researches and development projects, we ensure the protection of our armored car according to class BR8 of BRV 2009 standard. Class BR8 protects the vehicle from all types of automatic weapons, including armor-piercing incendiary bullets BZ 7.62 from a Kalashnikov assault rifle, which are very widespread. They represent a particular danger for passenger cars, can cause fire and smoke blanketing of the cabin. They are more dangerous than armor piercing bullets of higher energies that simply sweep a cabin without causing a fire.
Certification. Our production has international and national quality certificates of management systems standards ISO 9001, certificates of compliance of an armored vehicle with module classes BR6-BR8 of BRV 2009 standard. Tables of the basic standards of ballistic protection.
